The proximity to the sea and the flat nature of the area is the reason why it has been inhabited since ancient times. The earliest finds in the region date back to the Bronze and Early Iron Ages. There are many archeological finds from the Thracian period (IV century BC). In the region of Burgas were fought some of the great battles of the Bulgarian state with the Byzantine Empire. The victories of Khan Tervel (VIII century) at the Anhial field in 708 and of Khan Kardam (ruled 777 – 802) at the Karnobat fortress Markeli in 792 confirmed the Bulgarian state.
During the Ottoman rule the city developed as an educational and spiritual center. In the 18th century the port of Bourgas had already become the largest south of the Balkan Mountains. Burgas was liberated from Ottoman rule on February 6, 1878. The city underwent strong industrialization and modernization in the early twentieth century.Along with its good transport links, access to the sea, developed industry and at the same time preserved history, Burgas today is an attractive destination for tourists. The city and the region offer a variety of opportunities for tourism – sea, cultural tourism with many museums and cultural sites, spa and spa, ornithological, wine tourism and more.
Tourists can learn more about the history of the city and other interesting facts in the expositions of the Regional Historical Museum of Burgas, which are located in several buildings. The historical exposition exhibits photos, documents about the recent history of Burgas – after 1878 to the 70s of the twentieth century. The archeological exposition at 21 Aleko Bogoridi Blvd. exhibits archeological finds from Prehistory and the Middle Ages. A special collection of exhibits presents the history of shipping on the Black Sea since the middle of the second millennium BC. Here visitors will learn more about the history of Burgas during the First and Second Bulgarian Kingdoms and the fall of the city under Ottoman rule

Tourism

The bridge of Burgas is one of the favorite places for walks of the residents and guests of the city. It was built in 1936 and is located near the casino.
In the park “Lake” (at the entrance to the sea garden) is built a bike park with three different levels of difficulty, and for those looking for more adrenaline is a special route for the so-called “dirt jumping” – a discipline in cycling, which overcomes artificially made from the earth mass jumps (baboons), and a number of attractive figures are performed in the air.
Many tourists are attracted not only by the clean and maintained beaches of Burgas, but also by the annual festivals of the city, such as the Festival of Sand Figures and the music festival Spirit of Burgas.

The city also hosts many literary, music and folklore festivals, culminating in the summer season.
As a large economic, cultural and tourist center, in Burgas you can find a variety of accommodation options – luxury hotels, small cozy family hotels, rooms, guest houses. The nightlife, especially during the summer season, also offers many opportunities – discos, bars, casinos. Apart from the central streets of Burgas, there are restaurants along the coast and in the Sea Garden. Near Bourgas are other seaside towns such as Chernomorets, Pomorie, Nessebar and Sozopol, in the area there are many campsites.
